Gillard's Timor solution dog whistles with the best

It's not the Pacific Solution — it's the Timor Sea Solution.

Julia Gillard's decision to ask East Timor President Jose Ramos-Horta to allow a regional processing centre on his island sounds familar — as familiar as John Howard setting up just such a camp on Nauru.

Turning the boats back, she says, is a shallow slogan that amounts to nonsense. And so it is. She makes no bones about Tony Abbott's claim that this is what he would do. The asylum seekers would simply sabotage their boats and Australian authorities would have to rescue them, she says. Shades of children overboard.

Gillard's whole approach is to stop the boats, however. The message she wants sent is that asylum seekers shouldn't get in boats in the first place.

And how is that message to be delivered? Get in a boat for Australia and you'll find yourself delivered to East Timor quick smart.

No matter how Gillard tried to couch her words, she is in John Howard territory.

"I want to wreck the people-smuggling business," she said bluntly.

She has a political problem and she wants to trump Tony Abbott. She wants to kill him softly, but there's no time for that. She just wants to kill him fast, and re-capture the territory he holds within the hysteria over asylum seekers.

Abbott upped the stakes significantly by announcing that any asylum seeker who arrived without documents would be presumed to have destroyed them and would be the denied the presumption of refugee status. Tough, but difficult to make workable. The Howard government proposed just such an idea and abandoned it after looking closely at it in 2004.

The further idea of giving the appropriate minister vastly increased power to overturn decisions on refugee status appears close to unworkable, too. How could a single minister review hundreds and possibly thousands of decisions? The main purpose, pretty obviously, is to sound tough.

Abbott and community concerns — particularly in key marginal seats — has got Gillard rattled. She agreed with Julian Burnside that it would take 20 years to fill the MCG with boat people at the current rate of arrivals. But he was "very, very wrong" to refer to "rednecks in marginal seats" stirring up all the alarm. Gillard's repudiation of Burnside's name-calling is almost a word-by-word re-run of a press release issued this week by the member for Lindsay, David Bradbury. Bradbury's seat, in the far-west Sydney area of Penrith, is extremely marginal, and asylum seekers have become a big issue there.

We used to talk about John Howard's skill at dog-whistling. Julia Gillard has pricked up her ears and learned the skill. The Timor Sea Solution proves it

So Saint Julia just reinvented the final solution.

The announcement by the Gillard junta is just another 'Pacific Solution' under a different name. There is very little difference between this scheme and the scheme the Howard Government had. I would agree though that 'sending back' boats as proposed by Tony Abbott would not be acceptable and in breach of Australia's international obligations as well as international maritime law. The sad drift to cater for the lowest common denominator in terms of once being a compassionate country has indeed began.

Julia is a pragmatic professional politician. Perhaps as her off shore destination she should consider Tasmania where Bob Brown could solve all the problems!

Tony and Julia PM have both missed the boat. What the public are angry about is not just the ones coming on leaky ships. Its the fact that they are coming at all! by the rate they are. We DONT want a huge popultation In Australia and the ones who have come here already more than make up for a high birth rate. Not to mention Tonys policy of no terminations even for the young and silly girls. He perfers they wreck their lives.. Stop em coming in the planes too is the message I hear every single day. Our own are homeless as we pump millions of borrowed $ into people from other places. Sorry but what about our kids not being able to get into a Dr for days! because we have alowed others to come by air boat. What about our parents and grandparents who built this country. Not just stop the boat people. I once waited for an elderly neighbour at a public hospital. I saw her old face in so much pain waiting and waiting. She sat there while 1, 2 3 migrants young strong men who could not speak English were called in before her. I complained and they said- Oh the young men were here first. Really was my reply- ***

Wow..'toughness' AND 'compassion'..she says.....a bob each way, all things to all people. Who'da thought. What a joke. This is the Pacific Solution backflip when you're not wanting to admit a Pacific Solution backflip. Proof the Coalition had it right BEFORE Labor dismantled it and went all soft on it, encouraging them to come again..... a Labor policy constructed by no less than Julia herself!! An admission of her own failure....without actually admitting it. It now comes down to credibility...and as Labor now have zero, the Coalition have been totally vindicated on this.

Julia is running true to ALP form on this one. If she is elected, we will be told New Zealand isn't interested, East Timor won't agree and therefore, the UNHCR can't become involved. She will then argue that she tried and it was not her fault that the idea failed. Same tactic the ALP has been using since coming to office - don't negotiate with the Greens and Independents to get legislation through the Senate, just let things fail and label the Opposition as obstructionist. Labor worships heroic failure. Nothing is ever their fault.

Gillard has always been a dogwhistling racist who adored Philip Ruddock. What bothers me is the lousy dogwhistling all the media have been doing for the past 2 years as they pore over the bones of a few thousand innocent people.

Turn Tasmania into a "Refugee Asylum Residebnce". Clear the forest for a space for a 20,000 person camp; build a complete town, with all the needed facilities and continue to invite "asylum seekers" to come, as the Labor Federal Government had been doing.
