Monster dust storm engulfs city

A few days ago, a giant dust storm (known as a 'Haboob') engulfed the US city of Phoenix, Arizona.

Some amazing videos have emerged of the dust storm rolling over the city, like some apocalyptic cloud of doom.

Time-lapse - Dust storm engulfs Phoenix

And an amazing time lapse of driving into the cloud:

And another video for good measure.

Basically this is like the scene in The Mummy where Imhotep creates an evil sandstorm. But with less giant faces and bi-planes.

These Haboob dust storms are apparently common in arid areas, particularly in deserts like the Sahara.

I guess the miners will get the blame or climate change.

Perhaps, though it's pretty much just a meteorological event as far as I understand it. One of the hazards of living in desert/arid areas, or dusty areas in drought I guess.

I remember a few bad duststorms at the height of the drought in Oz, for example, out in western NSW. Nothing like this, though...

Ohh man, loved the Mummy reference - I needed a laugh this arvo!

Can't believe how dark it gets under the dust... scary stuff.

I wonder if Allison Dubois dreamt this.
