The small village of 18 people won the People’s Choice Award for the Victorian Opera Perfor-mance Cosi fan tutte, which was held over two nights last October.
The opera event was organised by Councillor David Fahey and community volunteers.
The event was a great success with some 900 opera fans attending over two concert nights, having travelled from as far away as Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland.
The Cultural Awards recognised Local Govern-ment’s role in promoting cultural activities.
“After the success of the opera, it felt great to win such a prestigious award,” Opera organiser Cr Fahey said.
“The opera and other cultural events mean a lot to our small community and this award is a testament to our efforts.”
The special Paradise Palladium Theatre, which is jokingly referred to asthe “Pig Shed” adds to the extraordinary experience of theatre in the outback.
Since establishing the theatre, several operas, functions and dance nights have been held, bringing hundreds of people each time to the small town.
Urana Shire Council general manager John Hunt accompanied Cr Fahey to the awards.
“The level of community engagement in this project
has been enormous,” Mr Hunt said.
“It was a real honour to see the smallest town in the smallest shire, win the People’s Choice Award.”
