DARLINGTON Point diggers were finally honoured with the unveiling of their own nominal roll last Wednesday.
The board was officially unveiled by Member for Riverina Kay Hull who said it was a proud day for Darlington Point.
“It’s tremendous to see how a community can come together to recognise their servicemen and all that they have given to this country,” Mrs Hull said.
“For every name on this board there are lots of family members that have made this community what it is.
“Not only are you proud as a community but we are very proud of you.”
The unveiling was attended by Member for Murrumbidgee Adrian Piccoli, former members of the armed forces, the families of the diggers and RSL officials.
The board lists five diggers from the Boer War, 99 from WWI, 200 from WWII, eight from Vietnam and 49 from the Reserves, a total of 361 names. President of Darlington Point/Coleambally RSL sub-branch Eddie Rooks said the two-and-a-half-year task could not have been completed without the help and co-operation all those involved.
“I’d like to thank all those who helped getting the names together and getting the boards up,” Mr Rooks said.
The secretary of the RSL Ken Martin said that if family or friends found that a name was missing on the board to contact him and he would make sure they found their proper place on the roll.
A display cabinet has also been constructed and anyone who has items they wish to exhibit are more than welcome to add to the cabinet.
