AUSTRALIANS are being urged to place blood donation at the top of their New Year’s resolution lists in 2012.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service will need 1.4 million donations in 2012 as the nation continues to rely on just 3 per cent of the population for its blood.
With demand for blood and blood products expected to double in the next decade, Blood Service spokesperson Diane Mortimer urged more Coleambally residents to give blood.
“One in three of us will need blood in our lifetime yet only one in 30 donate,” she said.
“Many Australians treat New Year’s resolution as a negative – they often try to give up something rather than take up a life-changing activity, like blood donation.
“We know that Australians will need at least 1.4 million donations in 2012, so we’re urging people who have held off from donating to give it a go this year.
“Just an hour of your time will help save three lives and afterwards you can enjoy free food and refreshments on us.”
“The Donor Mobile Unit visited Coleambally once every three months,” Mrs Mortimer said.
The next visit is scheduled for Thursday, January 19 from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
