ON WEDNESDAY, December 12, parishioners and priests, past and present, attended a Mass at St Peter’s Church Coleambally to celebrate 25 years since the day the church was officially opened and blessed.
Bishop of Wagga Bishop Gerard Hanna officiated at the Mass, which was concelebrated by priests Fr Wilf Plunkett (Parish Priest 1971 to 1976), Fr Robert Leaver (Parish Priest 1980 to 1981), Fr Darren Howie (Parish Priest 2002 to 2006) and Fr Andrew Grace (current Parish Priest).
The St Peter’s school children opened the Mass with the debut of their new school song You Are My Rock, written specifically for the school by songwriter and musician Andrew Chinn.
After the Mass a celebratory barbecue was held in the St Peter’s school grounds.
The barbecue was manned by members of the school council and the catering was provided by the St Peter’s Parents and Friends.
The children enjoyed the jumping castle and ice blocks after tea.
Master of ceremonies John Mannes introduced John McInnes and Ms Rachel Kelly, who outlined the history of St Peter’s Church in Coleambally.
This brought back many memories for the older parishioners.
A PowerPoint presentation prepared by Mrs Denise Kelly and her daughter, Hannah, brought back still more memories-of the decision to build a new church, the contracts being signed, the building process and the official opening by Bishop Carroll on December 12, 1982.
Also screened were images of celebrations, baptisms, weddings, communions, confirmation and school masses, which have taken place since the church was opened.
Fr Grace made a vote of thanks and a presentation to Bishop Hanna, Fr Plunkett, Fr Leaver, Fr Schipp (Parish Priest 1986-1989), and Fr Darren Howie for their attendance and participation.
He also thanked the Parish Council, school council, parents and friends, Daniel Tuohey and St Peter’s School staff and students, Mrs Jean Vivian and Mr John Mannes, as well as the parishioners in attendance.
Mr Mannes then invited Bishop Hanna and Eileen McInnes to cut the Silver Jubilee cake made, and beautifully decorated, by Mrs Jean Vivian.
St Peter’s has been the hub of Parish activity for the past 25 years, and the jubilee celebration was a fitting tribute to the importance of the church in parishioner’s lives.
