WITH the cotton harvest fast approaching, the construction of a cotton gin at Whitton is on track for an April deadline.
It is expected the gin will be able to start receiving cotton on that date in what is tipped to be a bumper crop.
In October last year, the development application, which was lodged by a consortium of cotton growers from the area, was unanimously approved by Leeton Shire Council.
The gin is located eight kilometers south of Whitton and its construction was sparked by the only processing facility being hundreds of kilometers away.
One of the growers behind the development, Tim Commins, said the gin was coming along well.
“The pouring of the last of the concrete is happening and we are installing equipment,” he said.
“Crops are looking very good at this stage.
“I would say the gin will be running for a long time this year once it starts receiving in April.”
The gin is expected to employ eight full-time staff and create 20 seasonal jobs and will be able to precess 120,000 bales of cotton.
Mr Commins said work behind the scenes at the gin had been a long a process, but was he hoping it would pay off.
“We’ve had a very solid commitment from the growers in this area.” he said. “It seems we have the support and we would like to think it will be a good thing.
“We are pleased everything is on track and looking good.”
