LAST week a small group of Coleambally business people and locals gathered to listen to Dr Imogen Fullager present ideas on a proposed solar energy program for Coleambally.
Dr Fullager is a scientist with a passion for water and agriculture and has created a company called Weathering Change for the purpose of getting governments to work together to embrace change.
Her company is keen to promote the development of rural renewable industries and has now brought Sparks Solar, an Australian-owned photovoltaic company on board.
This company makes the panels that are used in the solar industry.
Weathering Change is now looking to invest $50,000 to install one solar system in Coleambally and the search is now on for a suitable roof to house the system.
The Coleambally community and businesses are being asked if they would also like to place another similar system in the town.
The systems would feed energy back into the electricity grid and the person or company generating the excess energy would receive a rebate in their electricity bill.
Currently the generation of one watt of solar power that goes back into the grid is rebated at 60 cents per watt.
As a result of the very positive meeting Dr Fullager’s
company will now employ Sparks Solar to investigate suitable available roof space and to establish the best position.
From this investigation a person or business will be approached and an agreement developed between them and Weathering Change.
Spark Solar will also investigate other possible roof locations and positions suitable for other systems.
The CREATE steering committee will also seek support from the community, businesses, organisations and farmers in the hope of setting up a “community invested solar hub”.
Further discussion on the project will take place tonight at the CREATE steering committee meeting being held at the Coleambally Community Club starting at 6.30pm.
