“Some 500,000 people in Australia volunteer their services in some emergency management capacity and 350,000 of those are directly involved in emergency first response principally through the various rural fire services and State Emergency Services,” Member
for Riverina Kay Hull said.
“These grants can assist those organisations build and train their pool of willing volunteers to be ready for a whole range of possible emergency situations in the Riverina including bushfires, motor vehicle accidents, and other disasters and situations.
“The types of projects which will be suitable for organisations to apply for funding include public education programs, volunteer recruitment campaigns, establishment and upgrade of training facilities and volunteer training.”
Mrs Hull said approximately $4 million will be available for grants in the 2008-09 round of funding.
