Noack calls for support to stop phone removal

24 Feb, 2010 01:00 PM
MURRUMBIDGEE Shire councillor Jacque Noack is urging the whole community to have its say and fight to keep two of the areas public phone.

As announced late last year, Telstra has earmarked two public phone booths in the Murrumbidgee Shire for removal.

Council unanimously voted to fight to maintain the phones and now Cr Noack is urging that the community gets behind the effort.

The phone boxes marked for removal are at Waddi and

in Kingfisher Avenue at Coleambally.

“I urge all locals to write or phone the hotline number to put in their personal protest against the removal of the phones,” Mrs Noack told The Observer.

“Both of the phones are on highways and not all travellers are able to use their mobile phones in our areas due to black spots and not having Next G service.”

The council’s fight to save the phones has reached as far as Victoria with Cr Noack being interviewed by Derryn

Hinch on national radio about the cause.

“If people are going to call the hotline it would be great if they could do it from the phones in question,” suggest Mrs Noack.

“This would help to emphasise the need for these community assets.”

Cr Noack also raised the issue at the February council meeting requesting that each individual councillor formally protest the removal of the phones.

Protests can be lodged in writing to Locked Bag 6658, Sydney or by phoning 1800 011 433.
