COUNTRY Energy is issuing a timely warning about the dangers of wilful damage to substations, powerlines and other electrical infrastructure following two incidents which recently caused interruptions to power supply.
Power was lost at 11pm on Friday, June 13, and remained out for about four hours.
It is believed vandals interfered with the power supply network, resulting in a supply interruption to about 350 customers in the Coleambally area.
Another two-and-a-half-hour supply interruption occurred at 7pm on Tuesday, June 24, blacking out about 50 customers in Egansford and on the outskirts of Coleambally.
Country Energy south western regional general manager Richard Wake said the two interruptions had been investigated and it appeared both were caused by vandals interfering with the network.
“Interfering with the electricity network can potentially cause serious injury to the persons responsible,” Mr Wake said.
“While we are continually looking at mechanisms to improve security measures, it is vitally important that people understand the potential hazards of electrical equipment and ensure that they stay well away from all components of the electricity network.”
Mr Wake said high voltage electricity had the potential to arc, or jump, if objects interfered with the path of an electrical current, causing electric shock without anyone coming into contact with the electricity network.
Intentionally causing powerlines to clash together also has the potential to cause injury to people and serious damage to the electricity network.
“Country Energy works hard to ensure customers have a reliable electricity supply. However, external and senseless factors, such as vandalism, hamper this primary objective,” Mr Wake said.
“If you see someone trespassing or vandalising the power supply network, or note anything suspicious on or near powerlines, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Country Energy on 132 080.”
