THE Women for a Living Basin (W4LB) delegation’s visit to parliament in Canberra is now only a week away.
The delegation is set to make its way to the nation’s capital on Wednesday, February 29.
Local irrigator Shona Hando will show her concern and support by making the trip with daughter Georgia.
Mrs Hando has attended many meetings to help prepare for “delegation day” and is hoping it will have some impact on the final decisions in the Murray-Darling Basin plan.
“We have a full day of meetings with key politicians confirmed, including Tony Burke MP, Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities and Senator Barnaby Joyce, shadow minister for regional development, local government and water,” Mrs Hando said.
“The women involved in planning the Women for a Living Basin delegation are all totally committed to their communities,
“We expect the politicians to listen to our message – that the uncertainty the Murray-Darling Basin Plan has created is hurting our communities and that they will hurt even more if the plan is implemented in its current form.
“We will not stand by quietly and let them put our communities and our families at risk.
“We know there are many more women out there who are passionate about their communities and we invite all those women and their families, including husbands, fathers and sons, to join this delegation.
“We invite them to show their support in the forecourt of Parliament House from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
A variety of speakers will address the people on the forecourt during this time.
“Many Coleambally people attended the MDBA meeting in Griffith in December; we now need to get some of those people on board to again show their concern about the Basin Plan in Canberra next week.
“We feel that it’s now or never and that we need to be in there fighting before decisions are made that will permanently affect our community.”
Transport by bus will be available from Coleambally (numbers permitting).
A bus is scheduled to depart from the Coleambally Post Office at 5.30am.
Tickets are $30 per seat and need to be purchased from Stitch in Time by midday on Monday, February. 27. Buses will also leave from Griffith, Leeton, Narrandera and Deniliquin.
