Lake Sharks take six-a-side trophy

03 Feb, 2010 10:14 AM
THE Coleambally Nomads annual Brolga Hotel Six-A-Side was held on Sunday and once again the trophy has headed out of town, with the Lake Sharks from Lake Cargelligo taking the champions title.

Despite crowd numbers being down on previous years, a full contingent of 16 teams was on hand to contest the championship.

A good day was had by all, with the drinks flowing along with the runs.

The consolation final was played out between local team Jar Jar Binks and the team from Gretta, Victoria with the visitors taking the trophy from the well-lubricated local boys.

The two teams contesting the champions trophy were locals Jukeboxheads and one of the teams from Lake Cargelligo, Lake Sharks.

The locals were outdone again by the visiting team, with the Sharks comprehensively taking the title.

Presentations at the Brolga Hotel, as well as an auction of cricket memorabilia, followed the final match.

Dan McGreal from the Yenda Jets was awarded the best batsmen on the day and Nathan Jones from Jukeboxheads was judged the best bowler.

The swimming pool was a great relief to many with the searing heat.

The cricket club would like to thank Sam and Chris Blackett for putting up with the vocal crowd.

This year Carl Chirgwin added to the entertainment by giving a blow-by-blow commentary from the middle of the field. The club would like to thank him as well as the other umpires on the day, Neil Schliebs and Kevin Mannes.

All proceeds from the bar and barbecue will go to the junior cricket club and thanks goes to Chris Noack and his band of helpers for running them throughout the day.

A big thank you also goes to Guy Kelly and Paul Woodman for the work they put in on number two oval, removing cat heads and bindis to ensure the ground was playable on the day.

The final thank you goes to all the event’s sponsors, as well as those businesses that donated prizes.

It was also great to see the out-of- town teams enjoying the day and encouraging to hear them say that they will be returning next year for another shot at the title.
