THE Coleambally Nomads cricket club annual Australia Day Six-A-Side tournament was played on Sunday, January 29.
A full compliment of 16 teams played out the day and many thanks to the youngsters and not-so-young who doubled up in some games, as a couple of teams pulled out at the last minute.
There was only two outside teams, one from Yenda and one from Lake Cargelligo, playing on the day with the rest being made up of local players.
Players were dressed up for the day with the girls flap attack side taking out the honours for best dressed closely followed up behind by Doggy Stylers.
Some innovating shots were played and attire worn which made the day.
There was also some football-like collisions from Nomads captain Tom Fuller throwing his weight around and trying to take Will Lyall out, who must of thought a feather had brushed him.
The consolation final was played between Doggy Stylers and No Idea.
But No Idea must have had some idea as it easily outplayed Doggy Stylers to win the final which is a great achievement as most of the players were C graders out of our club.
The trophy final was played between the two out of towners Yenda Jets and Lake Cargelligo and even though this game was played in drizzling rain there was still some explosive hitting from both teams, with Lake Cargelligo getting the better of Yenda and being crowned the 10th team to be judged Six-A-Side champions.
Carl Pound from Spartans was judged best batsman on the day, scoring a 54 and Nathan Jones judged as best bowler in securing a hat-trick. He kept it in the family, getting brother Blake out then cousin Lyall with two consecutive golden ducks.
The highlight of the day was former Australian cricketing legend Jeff Thomson presenting the awards after the day. A small but appreciative crowd listened to some of Jeff’s life and cricketing stories which was well received by the audience who attended the night at the Brolga.
Many thanks must go to Steve Fattore, Amy Brain, Andrew Herbert and Tim Strachan for preparing and cooking the spit roast rolls which proved popular on the day.
Also, to all helpers who helped put the day together, especially Chris Noack and Mick Breed, and anyone else that helped set up, pack up, worked on the bar, etc.
Thank you also to Andrew Boal and Paraway Pastorol Co for the succulent lamb.
The two umpires for the day did a tireless job, They were Neil Schliebs and our commentator/umpire Carl Chirgwin, who gave us a blow-by-blow description from the centre.
Our two raffles for the day went well with the first prize the “Super Couch” being won by Matt Bull, as he was not in attendance he missed out on the “Super Couch” experience but still received an esky and retro one-day shirt signed by Jeff Thomson, second prize of a bottle of scotch was won by Lyall Painting.
The other raffle of an air-compressor, jacket, hat, sunglasses and stubbie holder donated by C.I.A Tyres was won by Andrew Boal.
A thank you goes out to our sponsors on the day. Without them the day would not have been possible and getting sport stars to the town for everyone to enjoy would also not happen without their support.
So thank you to Brolga Hotel, Coleambally Community Bank, Coleambally Irrigation, Tim’s meats, S and K Engineering, Sam’s Party Hire, Mick’s concrete, C.I.A Tyres, Pump’s, Pipes and Power, Magic’s Bobcat, Coly Roadhouse and Paraway Pastoral Co.
