Nomads beat Diggers by a huge 183 runs

24 Feb, 2010 01:05 PM
THE Exies Coly Nomads took on Exies Diggers on Friday night in a day/night fixture in Griffith.

Captain Craig Mark finally won a toss and elected to bat sending in Bernard Cullen and Dave White to open proceedings.

White’s night was short-lived when he was out for a duck brining Michael Hodgson to the crease in a reshuffle of the usual batting order.

Cullen and Hodgson took the score to 38 before Cullen was out for 19.

Craig Mark then came to the crease and together with Hodgson they brought the score to 2-88 at the drinks break, with running between the wickets the feature.

Mark didn’t last long after the break, out for 16, which brought Guy Kelly out looking to up the run rate and he didn’t disappoint and with Hodgson finally hitting his straps, they took the score to 131 before Hodgson was out LBW for a very athletic 65.

This brought Tom Fuller in and he and Kelly kept the momentum of dispatching the bowling to all parts of the ground and out of it.

Kelly was next to fall for 30 and the Nomads were on 6-169. Josh Shaw joined Fuller and the carnage didn’t stop, with the two youngsters showing the older ones how to do it.

Shaw was finally out in the thirty-third over for 17, leaving Graham O’Connell to help Fuller reach his half-century.

However it wasn’t to be with Fuller stranded on 48 not out at the close of the allocated 35 overs with O’Connell also not out on three and the total run score for the Nomads at 6-229.

The Nomads then took to the field extremely confident with Shane Hutchinson and Shane Pound opening up the attack and it didn’t take long for them to start picking up the wickets with some good tight bowling.

Hutchinson finished with 2-15 off his four overs.

This brought on the “destroyer” Guy Kelly, who wreaked havoc once again picking up two wickets in his first over to have the Diggers reeling at 6-28 and they never recovered, with Pound finishing with 2-15 off seven overs.

Kelly again finished with unbelievable figures of 4-9 leaving Graham O’Connell to finish off the Diggers with 1-3 off just four balls.

This left Diggers decimated and all out for just 47 giving the Nomads victory by 183 runs entrenching them at the top of the ladder.

The Magic’s Bobcat man of the match award was a difficult decision as it could have gone to either Guy Kelly, Tom Fuller or Michael Hodgson but the captain decided to put Hodgson out of his misery and pain and awarded him the mug.

Next week the Nomads will take on Leagues Club on Saturday night under lights at the Exies number one oval. The team will be taking a bus for players and supporters leaving the Brolga Hotel at 2.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to come along and support the local team and should contact Craig Mark on 0428 416 002 for bookings.

This will be Nomads last game in the home and away part of the season as they will have a bye before the finals commence and they attempt to claim back-to-back titles in the GDCA B grade competition.
