IT’S on again – the annual “Australia Day” Coleambally Cricket Club Nomads’ six-a-side tournament.
With this being the 10th year running, expectations are high for the annual championship.
The teams and draw have been finalised for the event, which will be held on Sunday, January 29 at No 2 and 3 ovals, starting at 9am.
President of the Coleambally Cricket Club Michael Hodgson said the day will be a great family event, and invited all residents to bring a chair and the kids for an enjoyable day out.
“There will be a full bar available as well as spit roast lamb and pork rolls available for lunch,” Hodgson said.
“The swimming pool is also a great retreat being right next to the ovals, so bring a towel and have a refreshing dip while enjoying some entertaining cricket with umpire Carl ‘Dickie Bird’ Chirgwin commentating from the middle with the adding of some music between wickets.”
Being the 10th year of the competition, Hodgson said reigning champions “Jukebox Heads” have again invited challengers to knock them from their perch as they strive for back-to-back trophies.
Australian fast bowling legend Jeff “Thommo” Thomson has also been announched as a guest at the event, Hodgson said.
He will be on hand to present the trophies after the game before he heads to the Brolga to do his sportsman show.
“For those few who saw him last time he was in town you will know you won’t be disappointed as he is a great speaker, talking about his conquests and life as an admired sportsman right around the cricketing world with funny stories and his knowledge of the game,” Hodgson said.
“He is still regarded as the fastest bowler of all time as speed guns were not used in his day but wicket keeper Rod Marsh believed if he was clocked out of the hand he would of reached 180km/h in his career.
“(Thomson) played 51 tests for Australia, scored 679 runs with an average of 12.81 and took 200 wickets at an average of 28.
“He also played 50 one-dayers and scored 181 runs at an average of 7.54 and took 55 wickets at an average of 35.3.”
Tickets for the event are $20 each and available at the Brolga from behind the bar. Doors open at 7.30pm. Parents are advised that Thomson’s show may involve offensive language.
“Hope to see everyone on Sunday. Help out your local cricketers raise much-needed funds, have a great day in the process and meet an Australian sporting legend,” Hodgson said.
