Roddick overcomes Tomic to win tennis

21 May, 2008 11:47 AM
This 13-round competition has proved to be one of the most strongly contested in the last few years with four of the seven teams separated by only three points at the halfway mark, after which Roddick and Tomic pulled away from the pack, becoming the teams to beat into the finals.

The young gun Roddick pairing of Joe McGillivray-Reeves and Cory McMillan came out blazing with the optimism of youth and pushed Keith Hollamby and talented new player Julie Jackson all the way before coming away with a 6-all draw in one of the best games of the night.

Captain Shane Pound combined well with an in-form Tristram Hertslet to give Perry Hardy and Ray Sinclair a surprise, overcoming them 6-2.

This inspired Roddick through the next two sets with

Jane Perkins and Lauren Pound’s casual style overcoming Cate Hardy and a running Wayne Coster and Keith Hollamby (6-2) and then Tristram Hertslet and Cory McMillan dominating Ray Sinclair and Julie Jackson (6-1).

However, when a captain’s innings was needed, husband and wife team Perry and Cate Hardy (Tomic) took the challenge up to Shane and Lauren Pound and gave the small spectator crowd a great game to watch with some clever play, coming away with a much-needed 6-4 win.

Tomic’s Wayne Coster and Keith Hollamby pulled everything together with a good win (6-1) over Jane Perkins and Joe McGillivray-Reeves, the score not truly representing the tight tussle that it was.

With six of the night’s nine sets played, the points tally was tight with only three points separating the two teams.

Roddick’s Lauren Pound and Cory McMillan (who had saved his best tennis for the finals) got together over Cate Hardy and Julie Jackson (6-3) with Tristram Hertslett and Joe McGillivray-Reeves putting the finals success out of reach for Ray Sinclair and Keith Hollamby (6-3).

Shane Pound and Jane Perkins, Roddick’s top duo, put the icing on the cake for their team with a tightly contested, tricky game over Perry Hardy and Wayne Coster (6-3).

Club president Chris Mannes thanked all players for their great sportsmanship during the competition and encouraged everyone to sign up for the spring competition which is pencilled in for late August.

Everyone is encouraged to keep their fitness up over the winter recess by using the court at any time.
