Shire honours its sports stars

MANY great sporting achievements were accomplished during 2011.

The Coleambally and Darlington Point Australia Day sporting awards went to some highy deserving sportspeople.

Coleambally Sportsperson of the Year Michelle Brain has

continued to excel in her chose field of karate and coaching in 2011.

Brain organised participation in tournaments so that she would be ready to undertake her grading to achieve her black belt.

She attended a training camp under the tuteledge of Kancho Matsushima, head of kyokushin organisation, prior to grading in September.

Brain also completed her certificate II in sports coaching through the Australian College of Sports Development in 2011.

Coleambally Junior Sportsperson of the Year Maddie Mannes represented Griffith Netball Association in the under 15 and under 17 teams.

Mannes was selected in both the Southern Sports Academy under 15s and open netball squads.

Mannes was selected for the NSW Swifts under 15 Talented Athletes program.

She was Coleambally A grade best and fairest and Coleambally Netball club sportsperson of the year.

She co-coached the under 13s netball team and also won long jump at MIA and Riverina athletics carnivals.

Coleambally Sub-Junior Sportsperson of the Year Hannah Buchanan has had a successful year in sport.

Buchanan was age division champion at the St Peter’s Primary school swimming, athletics and cross country

carnivals.

She competed in the diocesan carnivals for swimming, athletics and cross country.

A keen netballer, Buchanan was best and fairest for Coleambally under 13s and SWJFNL in 2011.

Coleambally and Darlington Points Sports Team of the Year went to the Darlington Point-Coleambally rugby league under 16 team.

This team was the Group 20 Paul Kelly?Cup under 16 knockout winner.

The team was undefeated in all competition rounds and Group 20 under 16s premier.

Twelve players in this side were selected to play in

Group 20 rep representative teams and two players were selected for Riverina CHS team.

Senior Sportsperson of the Year Peter Jones is an all-round sportsperson but in 2011 Jones excelled at lawn bowls.

He won many championships throughout the year.

Within his own club Jones won singles champion, pairs championship and was runner- up in triples.

Jones was also a member of the Darlington Point Number 4 Pennant team which won the Zone 8 final to progress to the state finals held in Sydney.

Junior Sportsperson of the Year Joseph Gifford has been a member of the Griffith City Archers for two years.

During this time he has registered some significant achievements and received a number of awards.

He attended the National Youth Archery Championship in Canberra, competing in the under 16 age group.

In this category targets are at distance of 55 metres.

Gifford was first in the intermediate section of ACT titles and was 10th in the Australian titles.
