THE Waratah Tigers withstood a barrage of pressure from Darlington Point-Coleambally in the final minutes to survive with a 2-all draw on Sunday.
Battling slippery conditions on Exies Oval after this week’s rainy soccer state titles, handling errors kept the scoreline low.
DPC was the strongest in the first half, with a try from Alysia Hopwood putting the away team ahead on the scoreboard.
But the Waratahs weren’t going to be defeated easily,
with Jessica Schulz scoring a try for the home team.
Meanwhile, Steph Koko stopped an almost certain DPC try with a lunging tag.
DPC pushed its way ahead with a try from Jessie Burns, with the game looking like it was in the visitors’ pocket.
But the game turned around when Waratahs’ Amelia Lolotonga scooped the ball up at the Waratahs’ tryline to run the length of the field for her crucial equalising try in the final five minutes of the game.
Waratahs secretary Mark Jaffrey said the team had shown dramatic improvement in the last few weeks.
“The handling wasn’t the best, because the ground was a little bit slippery, but that couldn’t really be helped,” he said.
“DPC basically had them under pressure for the last few minutes, but they couldn’t score.”
The Waratahs will face West Wyalong next week, while DPC takes on TLU.
