THE Darlington Point-Coleambally (DPC) under 16 Roosters have earnt themselves a place in next week’s preliminary final after winning their game at West Wyalong last Saturday.
The boys played a determined Leeton team which came out firing and looking for an upset win.
But the Roosters were able to score first with Dion Curphy spotting a gap in the defence to weave through for a try.
Leeton then went on to score twice.
Towards the end of the first half, Ben Hogan was able to score a try and the boys went to the break down 12-10.
Early in the second half Leeton scored to take the score to 18-10.
But to the DPC boys’ credit, they never gave up and played some determined football to claw their way back in to the game.
Some great teamwork resulted in Dion Curphy once again crossing the line.
The conversion attempt hit the post and bounced back, leaving the score at 18-14.
Jamie Demamiel then scored a good try and converted, bringing the scroe to 20-18 DPC’s way with about ten minutes to go.
The play was at Leeton’s end many times, but with great defence and determination the Roosters were able to keep their opponents from scoring.
With five minutes to go Brenton O’Brien used his strength to cross the line, giving the Roosters a five- point lead. All the spectators were kept on the edge of their seats as game clock ticked down.
Play went from end to end but DPC was able to keep Leeton from scoring and when the final whistle blew it was a 24-18 win to our young Roosters.
Next Sunday the boys are up against Waratahs in the preliminary final at Yenda from 10am.
Good luck to the team and coach Simon Fuller.
