LAST Sunday saw round 6 of the Group 20 competition with the Darlington Point-Coleambally (DPC) Roosters making the trip over to Lake Cargelligo to meet the TLU Sharks.
The Lake was full again – a few seagulls were there, the Sharks were circling and the Chooks were about to become victims of a clean sweep at the Lake Recreation Oval.
The Lake 16s is a good team and it was on song on Sunday morning, demolishing the Roosters in a polished display. Brenton O’Brien was good for DPC and Lachlan Kelly showed some stout defence.
Mitchell Wiseman led out an under- strength DPC under 18 team, that was no match for a fired-up TLU unit.
Mitchell led from the front and tried to rally his troops.
Playing at hooker Matt DeMamiel enjoyed his new role and got though a lot of tackling.
The DPC reserve grade fought out a tough encounter with TLU.
However, the Sharks held a slight edge in fitness and mobility and were able to defy the Roosters of a win. Colin Smith, Brendan Wade and Matt Ryan stoodout for DPC.
First Grade DPC got away to good start to lead early in the match until the Sharks came back and piled on some points to shoot away for a handy lead.
The Roosters then reeled the Sharks back in to be within striking distance at half- time.
The game was in the balance and both teams were playing some bright attacking football.
The second half was nearly a replica of the first, with both teams unable to defend against some intense and at times, dazzling attacking rugby league.
The Sharks blasted away again on the scoreboard, DPC mounted another fightback and the Sharks were starting to wobble.
The Sharks supporters hugged the sidelines and were giving the officials plenty of advice on the rules of the game.
Finally with five minutes remaining, the scales tipped once more the Sharks’ way, as they post two late tries to seal victory.
Joe Mitchell had a good game for DPC, scoring three tries and co-coach Tom Doubleday plugged away for the entire match.
On May 9 the inaugural Jack Carrol Cup was played between DPC and the Griffith Waratah Tigers.
Hoping to take the Cup, the first grade team went into the sheds at half-time with the scores locked 12 points a piece, with the DPC boys completing their sets well and keeping the star-studded Tigers in check.
After the break things fell apart for the Roosters and with a glut of possession for the Tahs the Tigers ran away for a comfortable win.
Brian Henderson for DPC never threw the towel in and along with teammate John-Michael Cahill was the Coly Concrete Hard Men for DPC.
Next week DPC takes on Hay at the Darlington Point Sportsground.
