THE Coleambally Tennis Club rounded off its latest night competition last Tuesday evening in perfect, calm conditions with a small supporting crowd in attendance.
The team to beat all comp, Jaffas, led by Parry Hardy, held off a rallying Smarties to claim victory on the night, 44 games to 35.
The Smarties got off to a flying start, with a strong win by Mitch Wiseman and Domenic Garraffo (6-1), who had Trevor Lashbrook and Heather Perkins scrambling from one side of the court to the other.
Smarties’ bold start carried into the next game, with Ian Payne and Donna Wiseman going down against a determined John Culleton and Daniel Whittred (7-5).
To say Jaffas needed a confidence booster was an understatement and it was left to team captain Perry Hardy and an on-fire Tim Strachan to spark a change of fortune.
Combining with devastating effect, this dynamic duo saw off a challenging Shane Pound (sub for Smarties captain Kris Davies) and Craig Mark (6-2).
Perry and Donna Wiseman then continued Jaffas revival, downing Shane and Daniel Whittred (6-1).
With his blood well-and-truly up Tim Strachan, partnered well by Heather Perkins, outclassed Craig Mark and Dom Garraffo (6-3).
Heather delivered some punishing forehands throughout the evening, and Tim’s strong serving didn’t see many returns.
