Hawks take low-key approach to Rioli

07 Apr, 2011 06:26 AM

CYRIL Rioli has carry-over points from the match review panel to tell him he needs to be careful when he resumes playing for Hawthorn. But the Hawks, fond of their famous ''unsociable football'', don't intend wielding a big stick over their brilliant on-baller over disciplinary issues.

Rioli has been suspended twice in the space of five games, copping two matches in round 18 last year and another one this week. On Monday he accepted a one-match sanction for striking Melbourne's Nathan Jones in the midriff at the MCG last Sunday. His guilty plea left him with 49.5 carry-over points that he will pick up if he offends again.

But the Hawks did not view the incident as serious. Yesterday football operations manager Mark Evans said: ''What did you think …? Was it over the top? I don't think we'll be going over the top on it.''
