Head contact rule up for scrutiny

25 Jul, 2011 12:21 AM

THE match review panel's stance on players making accidental contact to the head of opponents will be tested today.

At least three players — St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt, the Brisbane Lions' Jed Adcock and Carlton's Mitch Robinson — will be scrutinised for incidents over the weekend, although the absence of malice in all cases should allow them to be judged favourably.

However, North Melbourne's Michael Firrito will definitely be in the panel's sights. He was reported on Saturday for a crude late spoil on Lion Simon Black who was not hurt in the incident, a factor that should allow the charge to be withdrawn.

Of the three players involved in front-on contact, Riewoldt is a strong chance to escape punishment because it was not clear the player he collided with, Adelaide's Brad Symes, was struck on the head.

Adcock, too, seems likely to be absolved of blame for an incident with North's Levi Greenwood. While Carlton's Robinson has a reputation as a tough player, he seemed to be solely attacking the ball in the incident with Essendon's Ben Howlett.
