The Darlington Point-Coleambally Roosters are ready to crow again in 2013, with a key off-season signing and a fresh confidence.
After a commendable fifth place finish last season, coach Andrew Herbert is keen to build on it, signing a man he calls “the fastest player in Group 20” – Sawtell’s Josh Bryant.
“He will add speed and strength to the back line,” Herbert said. “He is looking fitter than he has ever been and is by far the quickest bloke in the group.”
Bryant won a premiership with Sawtell in Group 2 in 2011.
Herbert said he was confident of a top three finish in 2013.
“It is 25 years since the club has won a grand final and the players are hungry to break that drought,” Herbert said.
The Roosters have held on to key players from 2012, including rep player Josh Curphey, Kyle Charles, Richie Bamblett and Group 20 rookie of the year Drew Hopwood.
Hopwood will move from the centres to five-eighth as he is more of a natural ball player and his vision and skill will be better utilised in that position.
This will free up Curphey to move back into the forward pack.
Herbert also remains in talks with two talented former locals who are planning a move back to the Riverina.
The club has confirmed that last year’s Roosters best and fairest, Jone Wesele, will be joined by another of his Fijian national squad members.
The diverse team will include two other overseas players: a Brit and a Tongan, which will bulk up their already powerful forward pack. Coaching staff for the five grades have also been appointed.
Herbert will coach first grade, Daniel Brady reserve grade, Shane Gilbert under 18s, Graham Carroll under 16s and Cameron Muir league tag.
The first training session for all grades was held last Friday.
Herbert said he was hopeful the club could have a “good crack” at the West Wyalong Knockout next month.
