AFL Riverina football operations manager Shane Buchanan revealed there is set to be changes to how yellow and red cards are interpreted.
No longer will teams be as disadvantages as they have been in the past when an individual player is carded.
Under the changes for next year, a player that is yellow carded will be able to be replaced. The player, however, is not allowed on the field of play for 15 minutes.
As for a red card, the player will still be unable to return for the remainder of the game, however he can be replaced after 15 minutes.
Buchanan said the changes were designed to create consistency across all competitions.
“It’s to try to bring most of the competition’s rules and regulations in line with the state generic by-laws,” Buchanan said.
AFL Riverina were one of the few competitions to interpret cards like they have. The by-laws do give competitions the flexibility to have local rules, such as the variation around finals qualifications for different competitions.
