The Darlington Point Museum is hoping to tap into these memories as they hold their 2017 open day on Sunday, April 30 with a display called ‘Telling Our Stories’.
The museum secretary, Mona Finley put it into terms of seeking hidden treasures.
“These need not have significant monetary value,” she said.
“Their value would be in connection with an individual event, or person, a special memory or the story could be about how the article came to be where it is today.”
The museum is already off to a good start having collected some items telling some evoking stories and memories of Darlington Point and include items brought back from the Middle East during WWI.
“We also have the travelling trunk of an Irish immigrant early in the 20th century,” she said.
“It has been beautifully kept and has been around the world to Canada, Ireland, Australia, eventually coming here to Darlington Point.
“I remember the man who owned it as being an older man and hopefully we can come to learn more of him.”
Mrs Finley herself has on show a dress handmade by her mother for a wedding in 1944.
For her, the dress brings to life memories of wartime and purchasing items with coupons.
“Of course because it was war time I often wonder how they got the material because dress fabric was a luxury item,” she said.
“We are looking for some WWII ration books to feature as well or petrol coupons.
Those who are interested in donating can rest assured items will be taken with great care while they are on display in the museum.
“This will be an opportunity for all sorts of hidden treasures to see the light of day and have their stories be told which are all part of the rich history of our district,” she said.
