The major race takes part over 80km of the Murray River, between Torrumbarry and Echuca, and is held on the second weekend in February each year, racing along a part in the river which features more than 120 bends.
Coleambally success comes from the under 16s category which featured an all-Coly line-up as George Payne and Harry Tooth were skiing while Glen Tooth was observing and Ian Payne driving the Murrumbidgee Maddog.
The team took out the boys under 16 expert race, despite having to overcome some difficulties.
“In the race we were about eight seconds down at the halfway point,” Ian Payne said. “The boys came back strong towards the end and we were able to win by about 30 seconds.
“We went amazingly well and are really happy with the result.”
The boys finished with a time of 36 minutes and 36 seconds which was the fastest time set in the Sunday morning session.
The day before they took home second in the under 16 boys social competition.
The desire to compete came from finding a junior development day in Victoria.
“I wanted to further George’s skiing ability and saw it advertised. That was back in 2011,” he said. “The two boys (George and Harry) have been skiing together ever since.”
It wasn’t just the boys who had success as there were girls representing Coly as well. Grace Tooth competed alongside Jaymi Clancy from Echuca with Corrine Donald driving and Claire Lee as the observer aboard The Contractor and took out the under 13s division with an impressive time of 55 minutes and 41 seconds.
The team was also one of the few all-females sides taking part in the competition.
Mr Payne was quick to highlight the achievements being recorded.
“To have three Coleambally kids winning competitions is just great,” he said. “They all worked hard and it really showed on the day.”
Although not as successful, another team of from the Coleambally area made a impression on the competition.
Taking the step up from the under 10s division where they ski by themselves, Jasmin Payne and Georgie Tooth skied together for the first time, being driven by Alan Smith from Albury and Sharron Breed as the observer aboard Murrumbidgee Madness.
Mr Payne congratulated the two juniors for making the step up.
“It was great to see them compete together,” he said. “Although they might not have place, the fact they finished the course is an achievement in itself.”
