Chief Inspector John Wadsworth spoke with The Area News to explain all the ins and outs of the three month long amnesty.
“The amnesty is in place is for members of the public to hand in firearms that may not be properly secured,” he said.
With around 100 to 120 firearms already handed in, Griffith LAC say there will be more as people rush to get them in before the last day on September 30.
“Our gun amnesty is an important way for us to stop crooks as well because when guns are stolen it’s a very big issue, because they are used in really serious offences.”

“I urge anyone out there who has unregistered firearms to bring them in, it’s a golden opportunity as there are no fines, no penalties of any sort.”
If Griffith LAC knows a firearm was involved in an offence there would be further investigations, but Chief Inspector Wadsworth insists he “has never known that to be the case” in the gun amnesty.
“Hand them in to the police station, say goodbye to them, and we’ll get rid of them and crush them up.”
