KANGAROO Flat coach Jayden Cowling says the Roos will take whatever finals cards they are dealt, as the BFNL continues to consider its options for its 2021 season finals series. The league on Thursday announced a revamped three-week finals format, featuring a top-six, instead of the traditional top five. How that will look is anyone's guess at this point. BFNL manager Cameron Tomlins said on Friday that the league was considering 'several options' for the finals series and a decision would not be made before Saturday's resumption of play. It's good news for Kyneton, currently sixth, and Strathfieldsaye, which could potentially claim sixth with a win over the Tigers in the final round should the current one-win gap remain after this weekend. Readying for a big clash against fellow finalists South Bendigo at Dower Park on Saturday, Cowling said the Roos were prepared for any scenario. "It is what it is, obviously all we want to do is just get out there and play," he said. "At the end of the day we have a job to do and getting into that grand final is our focus. "We don't know who we are going to end up playing first-up, it could be the sixth team, it could be Gisborne - we don't know. "We'll just have to back ourselves, make sure we get as much match practice in as we can and get the best prep possible going into finals." While one clear finals option would involve the top two teams having a week one bye (currently Sandhurst and Kangaroo Flat), with third playing sixth (currently Gisborne v Kyneton) and fourth playing fifth (South Bendigo v Eaglehawk) before a pair of cut-throat preliminary finals in week two, that would pose some worries for the Roos. "We're not exactly in the best position ... we haven't played for four weeks, (we) play this week and then won't play for another two weeks as we have Castlemaine (which has no A-grade team) in the last round," he said. "That's not a lot of match play to get to a grand final, especially when we'd have no second chance. "There's no real incentive in some ways to finish on top if we've only got one game to win to get to a grand final, but no second chance "To virtually not play a game for six to seven weeks and expect to go into a prelim final is pretty rough." The undefeated Roos will be aiming for their 10th straight win this season in Saturday's match. No stranger to BFNL premiership success, South Bendigo coach Jannelle Hobbs said the top-six format was certainly something different, but added the club was prepared to cop almost any model in a bid to get the season completed. "It will be good just getting back into it, that's the main thing we'll get out of it from here ... getting the girls playing," she said. "This weekend will be all about match practice; all teams need the matches. "This might be a good time to come up against Kangaroo Flat, after so many weeks off. That said, we are all in the same boat." The Bloods will be without centre Dani O'Toole and goal shooter Chloe Langley against the Roos. In a season that has already proven to be like no other, Hobbs is expecting the unpredictability to continue. "You obviously want to be at your peak coming into finals, so it's probably a wide-open race because no one will be at their peak," she "Hopefully, we still get a great finals series. "On the Saturday they didn't play BFNL (July 31), we had a practice match, just an intra-club one, but I'm glad we had a hit-out. "We've trained really well this week. Considering they had so long off, they trained brilliantly on Tuesday night. Hopefully, we can push Flat." In other games today, Sandhurst and Kyneton clash at the QEO, Strathfieldsaye battles Eaglehawk and Maryborough hosts Gisborne.
