Why are we voting? Where do we vote? Do I have to number all the boxes? Here’s the answer to all the questions you may have. 

What is a by-election? 

A by-election is an election held between major (general) elections. This weekend, voters in three seats – Murray, Cootamundra and Blacktown – will be voting to elect new members.  

The Murray electorate includes Griffith, Leeton, Coleambally, Wentworth, Deniliquin and surrounding areas. 

Why is there an by-election being held in Murray on Saturday? 

The state member for seat of Murray, the National party’s Adrian Piccoli, resigned from Parliament last month. An election is being held to fill the vacancy created by Mr Piccoli’s departure. 

Is it compulsory to vote? 

Yes, voting is compulsory for federal and state elections in Australia. If you do not vote, can you receive a fine.

When do I vote?

You can vote anytime between 8am and 6pm on Saturday 14 October.

Who are the candidates in the election?

There are six candidates standing for the election

Austin Evans – National Party

Helen Dalton – Shooters, Fishers and Farmers

Michael Kidd – Country Labor

Ray Goodlass – Greens 

Peter Robinson – Independent

Brian Mills – Independent 

How do I vote? 

You write the number 1 in the box next to the candidate for whom you wish to vote (your first preference). You can then write the number 2 in the box next to your second preferred candidate, and so on. Each candidate will have a recommended how to vote card, which you can follow if you wish. 

Do I have to number all the boxes?

No. Unlike federal elections, in NSW state elections you only have to number one box. You can number more if you wish. 

Where will we know the result?

The NSW Electoral Commisson starts counting at 6pm. Unless it’s really close, a result should be known by late Saturday night.
