Though the main strip along Fitzgerald and Angove streets struggled to assert a strong personality ten years ago, it's now a bustling creative, urban and sometimes edgy cultural hub. A key target of the local council's planning department over the past five years, the area has gone from outdated drab to epically fab.
Much like the other areas in the city, North Perth has plenty of heritage cred, being a popular area in the early years of Perth's history. It's always retained shopping and dining options, and a pub with live music and a cult following, but didn't offer a lot more than any standard residential suburb.
Classified as a district centre in the state planning framework, the town centre of North Perth was always considered an "important opportunity for targeted infill development and ??? expected to redevelop over time to meet changing community needs".
Now, Angove Street has transformed into a pedestrian friendly, vibrant street, with well-located, beautifully designed, safe and comfortable public spaces.
There's been a bump in housing stock - several apartment developments have gone up during the revamp, bumping the number of available dwelling from 3152 to 4100 over the past ten years. There's also 19 food and beverage establishments; including small bars, cafes, restaurants and the iconic live music venue, the Rosemount, as well as 42 retailers. Many of these are in existing infrastructure, repurposed and reimagined.
The council and local development group North Perth Local have also focused time and funds to running a number of community events, including the 6006 concert series, and the highly popular Angove Street Festival.
The work in the town is far from finished, and locals can look forward to a range of further redevelopment in the area.

The council and North Perth Local plan to install public artworks and fund murals, and develop a new public space at the corner of Angove and Albert streets, among other upgrades to infrastructure and transportation.

"Our major upcoming project is the development of North Perth Common (a town square) on the corner of Fitzgerald and View streets - this will be major urban open space in the middle of the town centre," said David Doy, City of Vincent place manager and project lead.
Designer Morgan Marks has been a local resident for over a decade, and recently moved from her namesake store in popular Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley, to open in the updated Angove Street strip.
"I've always loved living in this area. I love the character homes, I love that we're so close to so many suburbs and it's easy to get around, and I love that I can get almost any cuisine just down the road," she said.

"I love the changes in North Perth. Angove Street has become a collection of gorgeous little boutiques and stores, and the food and entertainment options are fantastic. I do look forward to them opening more retail space though - I think we have plenty of choices for coffees and cocktails now!"
