NEW ROLE: Tom Morton will step into an assistant coaching job for the Blues this year.

Coleambally’s Blues will line up for the first game of the year against North Wagga in Wagga this weekend.

The 2018 blues outfit sees the addition of Leeton’s Joel Crowhurst and Dillan Mcgillivray as well as Jesse Spencer and Tom Clarke from Griffith.

Newly appointed Blues Coach Tom Grove says he’s excited to finally get into the game.

“It’ll be good to finally get into the game. It’s been a long preseason. It’ll be exciting to get into the real games. North Wagga will be a big test for us,”

They would be a pretty strong unit, picking up a few over the off-season. They’ll be pretty well instructed too.”

Groves is excited to see how the new additions shape up come the weekend.

“There will be a few debutantes this weekend. The young fellas and their improvement and their growth as well. It’s been great to see the improvement over everyone.”

He says the new guys are already fitting in well.

The club played a preseason practice match against Jerilderie back in March, as well as taking part in a few inter-club matches.

“I couldn’t really name one person over the whole lot. It’s been pretty exciting to see the team form and the team stand up,” he said.

“A lot of experienced players didn’t play, but it showed a lot with the younger players stepping up. They all stepped up and played their role. It was great to watch.”

Groves says reigning premiers Marrar Bombers are the team to bat this year, but he’ll be keeping an on North Wagga as well.

“They’re obviously the reigning premiers and they’ll be a pretty sharp outfit,” he said.

“North Wagga were form early on last year. They’ve done well over the off-season too. I think they’ll definitely be ones to watch.”

Groves and Mitch Carroll are joined on the coaching roster by Tom Morton, whose impressive first season with the Blues culminated in a joint best and fairest win.

“After such an impressive first year where he demonstrated a lot of leadership we thought it was fitting he come on board as assistant coach.”

Coleambally will face off against the North Wagga Saints at McPherson Oval at 2pm on Saturday, April 14.
