Australians have been creating quirky letterboxes since letterboxes first appeared in 1831.
There are many great examples of the weird and wacky when it comes to letterboxes, but the best ones are those that show creativity and a sense of good ol’ Aussie humour.
Your letterbox should reflect the personality of the family at the end of the driveway.
Discarded rubbish such as old bikes, baskets or tins make great receptacles for mail. Visit your local recycling centre and take a look at the things other’s have thrown away.
There are some guidelines you will need to follow for Australia Post to be able to deliver your mail efficiently. Your letterbox should be:
- 230 mm wide (left to right)
- 330 mm deep (front to back)
- 160 mm high (from top to bottom)
- The slot should be the full width of your letterbox, but not large enough for someone to fit their hand through
- The elevation of the letterbox slot should be between 900 mm and 1200 mm above the ground.
You should also ensure it is weatherproof and and secured safely.
After that, you can get as wacky as you like.
