Farmed Murray Cod was given a tick of approval in the updated Australian Sustainable Seafood Guide, which is an independent tool for helping customers to choose their seafood wisely.

Australia’s largest Murray Cod producer is located in the MIA and the industry is continuing to go from strength-to-strength thanks to acknowledgements such as this. 

Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod’s (Aquna) managing director Mathew Ryan said word was spreading about the company’s operations.

“This is important recognition for us because it focuses on what we do and how we do it,” Mr Ryan said. 

“The other thing is this all the research that goes into being included into the guide is all done by an independent person. 

“It’s definitely validation of what we are doing.”

The latest guide, which was released late last month, is Australia’s resource for consumers seeking to make responsible seafood choices.

It was developed in response to growing public concern about overfishing, farming practices and their impact on our oceans and wildlife.

With a commercial fishing ban on wild Murray Cod, and an increasing appetite for the iconic fish, Aquna has responded by developing a versatile product that gives chefs new and flexible ways of including white-fleshed Murray cod on the menu.

The fish are pond-grown at their MIA operations, using recycled irrigation water. Mr Ryan said the community support of the operation was continuing to grow. 

“People are definitely more aware of what we are doing,” he said. 

“In the broader sense, I think the people in general are trying to be more careful in their choices of what they are eating, so to be included in this guide as being sustainable and a ‘better choice’ is great news. 

“It also shows this area is growing despite challenges with things like the Basin Plan.”
