Even at the dawn of a new W-League season, the Tokyo Olympics looms on the horizon for Illawarra's Matildas star Caitlin Foord.
The frustration and heartbreak lingers of penalty shoot-out defeats, to Norway in this year's World Cup in France and against Brazil in the 2016 Olympic campaign in Rio de Janeiro.
So as she prepares for another W-League campaign with grand final champions Sydney FC, taking on premiers Melbourne Victory at Kogarah on Sunday, the coming months are the biggest of her career.
After Australia's No.1 player Sam Kerr this week announced she would play with Chelsea in the English league, Foord is now arguably the W-League's most recognisable and marketable face.
But in her pursuit of more domestic success, the 25-year-old hopes it can be a launching pad to a break through international title.
"We know we're close," she told the Mercury.
"We've been right there with the top teams for a while, it's just about consistency and regularly performing in the big games.
"It's right at our fingertips, we've just got to reach out and grab it."
The Matildas followed a 2-1 win over Chile last weekend with a 1-nil victory over them in the second friendly in Adelaide on Tuesday.
A small step towards the February Asian qualifiers for the Olympics, with Australia grouped with China, Thailand and Chinese Taipei.
With Kerr breaking new ground by signing with Chelsea, Foord said she would also consider playing in Europe in the future.
However, Foord, who has played in Japan and the US, admits the comforts of home are appealing.
"That's the biggest factor," she said.
"When you're playing in America, you can come home to play in the W-League during the summer here.
"But obviously in England and Europe the seasons clash, so it's a big commitment. You never know, it could be something I'd look at, but it's always nice to be playing at home and spending time with friends and family as well."
Foord returned from the US and straight into Matildas camp, meaning she's had just the rest of this week to train with her W-League teammates.
Sydney FC will have plenty of attacking firepower, with Foord joined by Veronica Latsko, a striker from the US who played with Adelaide last season.
"I'm sure it will take some time together, but I've seen what she's capable of playing against her before," Foord said. "It's exciting and hopefully we can challenge for both trophies again, it's a big test to start the season against the Victory."
