Hillier was crowned the Blues' best-and-fairest on Saturday night, backing up his equal third finish in the league medal count.

Adding to the occasion, wife Maddie claimed Coleambally's A Grade netball best-and-fairest award, in a remarkable double for the couple.

But Hillier says his focus is on team improvement next season after he and Curtis Steele (who was runner-up in the Blues' best-and-fairest) were locked in for another season as co-coaches.

"I think at the start of the year definitely we were a bit complacent," Hillier said.

"We thought things were just going to happen with all the new players we had but it didn't turn out like that.

"We got jumped and it didn't roll on the way that we wanted... we had so many passages where we were really good (in games) but more often than not we went into that slump and sides got on top of us.

"Us players all agree, we didn't perform for four quarters in any games. It's something we've got to improve."

The Blues held high hopes of being a top three team. Instead, two wins in 16 games saw them finish with the wooden spoon.

"It was pretty disappointing the way it ended up. We definitely under-achieved for the goals we set at the start of the season," Hillier said.

"But I think we still got plenty out of the year with young blokes coming through... getting the game time into the young blokes has definitely been a positive.

"They'll be better for it, and we'll top up with a couple of quality players with good skills and that will be a massive boost."

Coleambally retain key forward and assistant coach Jade Hodge, along with the rest of their list but head to 2022 without Guy Orton and Tom Groves and almost certainly the injured Tom Morton.

Hillier will be heading into his fourth year as a co-coach. He says there's agreement within the group that they'll need to work harder - in the pre-season, and at training - to improve as a team.

However, he said the Blues' wider community took plenty out of their year, with a successful presentation night closing out a season in which the return of football and netball meant plenty.

"That was definitely the biggest thing. We didn't get too many wins on the board but the people we had around the club and the crowds this year was a massive positive," Hillier said.

"So many people would turn up to watch and back at the club, and wanted to support us. There was a great feel around the club all year."
