Police were baffled by the shooting of 48-year-old Wellington man Frank Smith, who was described as a supportive and loving father and grandfather.
He was driven to hospital in a critical condition by a Good Samaritan who saw him collapse in the front yard of a home on Thornton Street on April 27.
He died in Wellington Base Hospital after arriving with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Following initial police inquiries, Homicide Squad detectives took over the investigation under Strike Force Libani.
Earlier this year, investigators recovered a firearm linked to the murder.
Following public appeals for information, detectives arrested a 31-year-old man in Wellington on Wednesday morning.
He was taken to Wellington Police Station and is expected to be charged with murder.
