A lot of unwanted Christmas pets are being listed on Facebook sites, according to Jess Weir from Riverina and District Animal Rescue (RADAR).
“There are so many we could take in,” Ms Weir said.
“I don’t know how people part with them.”
Ms Weir has eight dogs in her care at the moment, including five border collie puppies named Wishbone, Batman, Halo, Rolley and Jax.
“I know of a family that surrendered two cats to us then turned around and bought a new kitten for Christmas,” she said.
“I also saw a shar pei and her puppy that had been dumped at the pound.”
Lorene Cross from Snowy Mountains Animal Rescue Team (SMART) said there would be an increase in pets being surrendered in February after the novelty of a puppy or kitten had worn off.
