Nationals candidate for Murray Austin Evans has strengthened his resolve to push for an overhaul of "ludicrous" laws that have paralysed the region's River Red Gum industry, following a meeting with industry leaders in Deniliquin.

Last week, Mr Evans vowed to lodge a Private Member's Bill in parliament, if elected, and lobby his Coalition colleagues to reverse the decision, which has cost the region hundreds of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in lost income.
Mr Evans heard of the devastation first-hand on Thursday during a tour of the national parks around Deniliquin with local fourth-generation sawmillers Ben Danckert from Gulpa Sawmills and Chris Crump from Mathoura Redgum Sawmill.
"It's deeply upsetting to see such an important industry mothballed … " Mr Evans said.
"The timber industry is part of the DNA of these towns.”
