Coming off a 13 year stint with the Child Crimes and Sex Abuse squad in Sydney, his 30 years in the police force have given him the vision to crack down on crime.

"I have come to this area for work several times over the years, and have always said if I was to go rural this would be the place to do it," he explained.

"I fell in love with the tapestry of the community here."

In his years in the major crimes squad, he has worked on closing pedophile rings, serial rapist cases and female genital mutilation offences.

"You need to have a clinical perspective to get the job done," he said on the strains of the operations.

"You also need to have a good team - there is a very good team here and I am looking forward to working with them to drive down crime."

Set to tackle a diverse range of unlawful behaviour, he is dedicated to reducing any offences which have a real impact on communities. Sights will be set on tackling thefts from cars, breaking and entering homes and businesses and importantly, targeting domestic violence.

"Domestic violence is very close to my heart - no child should grow up in those situations, it's heartbreaking."

He will work on raising awareness of the resources and organisations which work together to assist victims of domestic violence.

The heat will be on both habitual and first time offenders, making sure the foot stays on the gas during prosecutions in court.

"But I would strongly encourage victims to come forward. There is a huge support network that take steps to help you, but it's also up to you to make the first move," he stated.

"It's not a way to live, and if there are children involved they need to be protected and have a voice too."

Stepping away from the big city and heading bush, Detective Inspector Stek isn't expecting any surprises, saying the commonality and diversity of the city can be found right here.
