Paul Barlow and Rhys Thomas are on the hunt for musical instruments.

Mr Barlow, string teacher for Murrumbidgee Regional Conservatorium, has almost 100 students under his tutelage in schools right across the Griffith area.

He has seen many with the potential and passion to continue musical studies but who need violins.

"The Albury Conservatorium and Wade High gave us a bunch of violins, and they've gone to kids who want the opportunity to learn," he said.

"There shouldn't be any barriers to music."

With Griffith being a city attracting families from overseas, learning an instrument is a way to help children make new friends and become a part of our community.

He alongside Trevor Peacock from Griffith City Band are currently working on building a town orchestra, with both string and wind sections.

With its growth, they plan to have a senior and junior orchestra.

"It's happening," Mr Peacock said.

"We will have the students ... and a chance to play some really excellent music together."

Griffith East Public School teacher Mr Thomas is also experiencing the same phenomena - many students keen to join the school band, but not enough instruments to go around.

"Brass this year has been very popular," he explained.

"We have a lot of trumpets and a few baritones, trombones already - but we have run out. So we are looking for some reinforcements."

Already, he has 50 to 60 students in the training band, with another 30 senior.

Many more are waiting in the wings in need of instruments.

He with fellow teacher Vince Conlan have been thinking about a scholarship program to help students pay the $100 fee to join the band.

Last week, they had local Robert Gilbert donate a trumpet, as well as a few hundred dollars to help students on the waiting list.
