Reflecting fondly on his time at Tirkandi, Mr Watts told The Area News that his time spent mentoring, supporting and guiding indigenous youth in the wider community would always hold a fond space in his heart.

"A lot of people will judge young people, especially indigenous youth, who are experiencing challenges and difficulties in their life," Mr Watts said.

"The teenage years are already difficult enough and the boys who stay at the centre with us for our term long programs face additional challenges on top of that."

"Many people look down on these young fellas and cast them aside but that is just not how it should be."

Mr Watts said it was an honour to know each and every boy who came through Tirkandi.

"All of these young fellas are fantastic individuals and every single one of them I believe in," Mr Watts said.

"Often societies view of certain people isn't very well informed but once you actually get to know these young fellas you not only get to understand the challenges and problems that they are facing but you see them for who they truly are, honest, good and driven young men."

Previously Mr Watts has worked in youth justice in both the United Kingdom and Western Australia.

He will now return to Western Australia to work in a similar but more challenging position, advocating for and supporting not just Indigenous youth but entire indigenous communities in remote areas of the state.

"I was looking for a new challenge and I am excited for the change," Mr Watts said.

"This is a very challenging industry to work in and my perspective is that if you are going to deliver your very best it's good to change things around every few years.

"I feel like I have achieved what I set out to achieve with Tirkandi and I am leaving with lots of passion for the place."

A replacement has not yet been found to replace Mr Watts, however applications are still open.
