Having swapped bat for ball Bumrah wrecked England's upper order batting. He bowled Alex Lees (six) and had Zak Crawley (nine) and Ollie Pope (10) caught in the slips.

After a lengthy rain delay (there were only 38.5 overs played in the day) Mohammed Siraj earned India the prize wicket with a rising delivery which Joe Root edged caught behind for 31.

Jack Leach walked out as the nightwatchman but lasted only five balls before he was also caught by Risbabh Pant off Shami.

The close came soon after with Jonny Bairstow on 12 and skipper Ben Stokes yet to open his account.
