Long-serving regional politician Jacinta Allan is Victoria's 49th Premier, replacing Daniel Andrews after nine years in the role. The deputy premier from central Victoria put her hand up after Mr Andrews' surprise resignation from politics effective from 5pm on September 27. Ms Allan is the first woman to lead the state in three decades, since Joan Kirner became Victoria's inaugural female Premier in the early 1990s. MP Paul Hamer broke the news to reporters outside the party room, confirming Ms Allan and public transport minister Ben Carroll were elected unopposed as Premier and deputy. Ms Allan is expected to be sworn in later in the afternoon. Speaking to reporters after a lengthy caucus meeting, Ms Allan said it was a "deep honour and privilege" to be endorsed by her colleagues as the new leader. "Twenty-four years ago, almost to the day, when I walked into this place as a much younger woman from regional Victoria I never expected to have this length of service, or indeed to have had the honour and privilege of serving the Victorian community in various ministerial roles," Ms Allan said. "I pledge to the Victorian people I will continue to work hard as I have done every single day as a member of parliament." Ms Allan became emotional after she asked about becoming the state's second female Premier, something she said was "not lost" on her. "I hope it says to women... that leadership takes on different shapes and sizes and women have a place as leaders in our community," she said. "There is a place for women at every single decision-making table in every single organisation around this state." Born and raised in Bendigo, Jacinta Allan entered state parliament as Member for Bendigo East in 1999. She became a Minister for Employment and Youth Affairs in December 2002 and has held a range of portfolios since including public transport, major projects and transport infrastructure. She served as Deputy Premier alongside Mr Andrews since June 2022. Ms Allan was also the minister responsible for delivering the 2026 Commonwealth Games in regional Victoria before it sensationally cancelled due to cost blowouts in July. IN OTHER NEWS: Hours after the Labor leader announced his resignation, Ms Allan paid tribute to his tenure and confirmed her interest in the role. "Congratulations Premier. An unparalleled legacy that has changed our state forever & for the better," she said on social media. "Thank you for your leadership & your friendship. "I will be putting myself forward to lead our party & continue the extraordinary work of our Labor government." The next Victorian election is slated for November 2026. More to come.
